Adverbs in English Grammar

What is an Adverb?

An adverb is a word that describes or modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
It tells us how, when, where, how often, or to what extent something happens.

1. Adverbs Modify Verbs

They tell how an action happens.

Examples:


2. Adverbs Modify Adjectives

They make the adjective stronger or weaker.

Examples:

  • The movie was very interesting.

  • She is extremely smart.


3. Adverbs Modify Other Adverbs

They describe another adverb.

Examples:

  • He drives very slowly.

  • She answered quite politely.

Types of Adverbs

1. Adverbs of Manner (How?)

2. Adverbs of Time (When?)

  • now, yesterday, later, soon, today
    Example: I will call you later.

3. Adverbs of Place (Where?)

  • here, there, outside, everywhere
    Example: They looked everywhere.

4. Adverbs of Frequency (How often?)

  • always, usually, sometimes, never
    Example: She always wakes up early.

5. Adverbs of Degree (How much?)

  • very, too, enough, almost, quite
    Example: It’s too hot today.


Common Adverb Endings

Most adverbs (but not all) end in -ly.

Examples:

But some do NOT end in -ly:

Adverb Placement

Usually placed:

  • After the verb → She sings beautifully.

  • Before the adjective → very tall

  • Before another adverb → quite slowly
