Parts of Speech

In English, every word has a job to do. These jobs are called Parts of Speech. There are 8 main parts of speech, and each plays a special role in forming sentences.

1️⃣ Noun – Naming Words

Definition: A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples:

  1. Person – teacher
  2. Place – school
  3. Thing – book
  4. Idea – freedom                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Tip: If you can put “a”, “an”, or “the” before it, it’s probably a noun.

2️⃣ Pronoun – Replaces a Noun

Definition: A pronoun takes the place of a noun to avoid repetition.

Examples: he, she, it, they, we, you, I

Example Sentence: Ravi is smart. He studies hard.

3️⃣ Verb – Action or State

Definition: A verb shows action or being.

Examples: run, jump, is, are, have

Example Sentence: She runs fast. / They are happy.

4️⃣ Adjective – Describes a Noun

Definition: An adjective tells what kind, how many, or which one.

Examples: beautiful, tall, three, red

Example Sentence: The red flower is beautiful.

5️⃣ Adverb – Describes a Verb, or Another Adverb

Definition: An adverb tells how, when, where, or to what extent.

Examples: quickly, yesterday, very, outside

Example Sentence: She sings beautifully.

6️⃣ Preposition – Shows Relationship

Definition: A preposition shows the relationship between a noun/pronoun and other words in a sentence.

Examples: in, on, under, over, between, near

Example Sentence: The cat is on the table.

7️⃣ Conjunction – Joins Words or Sentences

Definition: A conjunction connects words, phrases, or clauses.

Examples: and, but, or, because, although

Example Sentence: I like tea and coffee.

8️⃣ Interjection – Shows Emotion

Definition: An interjection expresses sudden feeling or emotion.

Examples: wow, oh, hey, alas, ouch!

Example Sentence: Wow! That’s amazing.
