Verbs in English grammar 


A verb in English grammar is a word that shows action, occurrence, or a state of being.
It is one of the most important parts of speech because every sentence needs a verb to make sense.

🔹 Definition:

A verb is a word that tells what someone or something does, is, or happens.

Examples:

  • She runs fast. → (Action)

  • They are happy. → (State of being)

  • It rained yesterday. → (Occurrence)


🔹 Types of Verbs:

1. Action Verbs

Show what the subject does.
Examples: run, eat, write, dance, play
He plays football.

2. Linking Verbs

Connect the subject to a word or phrase that describes it.
Common linking verbs: am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being
She is a teacher.
They were tired.


3. Helping (Auxiliary) Verbs

Help the main verb to form tenses, questions, or negatives.
Common helping verbs: be, have, do, can, may, might, will, shall, must, should
She is singing.
He has finished.
Do* you like tea?*

4. Transitive Verbs

Need an object to complete their meaning.
She reads a book. → “Book” is the object.


5. Intransitive Verbs

Do not need an object.
He slept.
They arrived early.

6. Regular Verbs

Form their past tense by adding -ed.
Play → Played
Walk → Walked

7. Irregular Verbs

Change their form differently in the past tense.
Go → Went
Eat → Ate
See → Saw

8. Modal Verbs

Show possibility, necessity, permission, or ability.
Examples: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would
You must study.
She can swim.
